Subject Matter Expert Application

NBEO’s comprehensive and high-standard exam development process includes the ongoing participation of diverse groups of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). As a SME, you will have the opportunity to contribute to shaping the standards for the profession of optometry.

Subject Matter Experts are actively licensed optometrists from a variety of backgrounds.

NBEO strives to maintain an ongoing balance and diversity in the composition of SME groups in many areas, including:

  • Areas of expertise
  • Modes of practice
  • Years in practice
  • Geographic locations
  • Demographics
  • Institutional affiliations
  • Experience working with students or newly licensed optometrists
 
NBEO considers all SME applications, and the availability of SME positions is continuously evolving. SMEs are encouraged to apply for all potential areas of interest.

If selected, all SMEs are required to complete a Professional Services Agreement. SMEs are required to keep all information and materials secure.

Please note: NBEO Subject Matter Experts may not contribute to or participate in any way with any form of test or examination preparation pertaining to any NBEO examinations administered by or under development by NBEO. Important Message

NBEO is aware that some candidates have been informed by their state boards that score access is unavailable. Since March 2026, NBEO has provided all state boards with the ability to register for and access the new State Board Portal, along with multiple communications, onboarding instructions, and training resources. If your state board indicates they do not have access, we encourage them to contact NBEO directly for assistance so we can support completion of their portal setup.
